The price of freedom

'The price of freedom is eternal vigilance'. So said Thomas Jefferson 220-odd years ago, and this story seems to me to underline its present day relevance. I've said before in this blog that if theocrats ever come to power, the likes of me could very well find themselves in a concentration camp, if not a gas chamber. Yeah, OK, this so-called 'man of God' is an obvious extremist, but his views are, I think, indicative of the mindset of a substantial number of biblical literalists, who choose to allow dogma to overpower any kind of compassion or empathy for anyone who doesn't slavishly subscribe to the same worldview as themselves.

A bit of my cultural heritage

I've just been reading a post about the 250th anniversary of the sandwich (which apparently fell around a week ago), which included a link to a photograph of a well-known roadsign in my native part of the world. My dad was a Sandwich boy, so I've known about the 'Ham Sandwich' crossroads for as long as I can remember. But it wasn't this junction. There was (is) another junction, on the main road between Sandwich and Deal, which also included a finger post (long since replaced by a 'modern' version) like the ones in the picture for a village called Worth (where my aunt, my dad's older sister, was born), and another for a village called Great Mongeham, hence the local saying 'ham sandwich is worth a great deal'. As an aside, I was born in another of the places mentioned on the roadsign in the picture.
The post that initiated this bit of nostalgia on my part asked the question 'What's your favourite sandwich?'. After much consideration, and by a nose against many worthy contenders, my vote goes for toasted roast beef.
