Intolerance

There seems to be a lot of it about at the moment. It certainly doesn't seem to be a good time to be anywhere outside of the 'mainstream'. Atheists are 'parasites', elements of the Republican party in the US (and doubtless their fellow travellers in this country) want to recriminalise homosexuality, the head of a major world religious sect has been in this country espousing his organisation's bigoted, misogynistic creed, even voters in proverbially tolerant and liberal Sweden have voted for a racist, nationalist party in significant numbers. When are people going to realise that there's only one hominid species on this planet, of which diversity is a intrinsic characteristic, and that we've got to learn to live together or we'll surely die together. There's plenty of talk about looking for intelligent life out in the wider universe, perhaps we should start by trying to foster a bit of intelligence on this planet first.

  1. Hi there, Sammy

I think intolerance of all sorts tends to rise when the economy is struggling - witness Europe in the 1930s. It's always easier to blame someone else than to accept we're all in the same boat together, alas.

    Take care

  2. Hello Mark
I'm sure you're right about the economic aspects, exacerbated, it seems to me, by a worrying rise in fundamentalism of one sort and another. It's easier to follow the herd to actually think about the issues facing us all, or so it seems.

  3. Well, I don't have the age neither the experience to talk about economy or what it affects. But I do think that something can be done if we want to change it. I mean, I've convinced many of my friends to accept homosexuals. I truly don't know if they think I'm gay after that, and they still might tell some gay jokes sometimes, but I'm sure that they'll never again mess with a homosexual person. And this is the only way to change the world: with a bunch of people doing their small part, no matter how small it may seem; it actually changes something.

  4. Hello Dave
Thank you for your comment. I found your blog yesterday (through Tony's Red Flash) and it's very impressive. I would like to think your strategy of spreading enlightenment by individual people doing small things could be viable, but there's a lot of inertia and vested interests to overcome, and what seems to be a deep instinct to look for scapegoats when times are hard. I don't want to seem too cynical or pessimistic, and I absolutely admire your enthusiasm, but I think there's got to be some collective will to change the world, and that seems to me to be unlikely in present circumstances.

    Love & best wishes
