Hardly a day goes by when I see stories which underline the deleterious effect of religion on society. Whether it be Islam or Christianity, or others, organised religion seems to me to capable only of hatred, destruction and suppression of the human spirit under the dead hand of superstition, all, in sick irony, in the name of supposedly loving gods. If this is 'love', give me some honest animosity any day. Surely humanity has come far enough from the feudal, medieval roots of these pernicious cults to not want to live in thrall of this imaginary nonsense any longer. Education, and more education, would appear to be the answer - except, of course, if you advocate education, they shoot you in the head. It's all vile, almost beyond words.

I hear you. And in many ways, I wholeheartedly agree. But the thing that galls me, being at least nominally Christian, is that the "good" Christians, Muslims, Jews, whatever, are not MAKING ONE BIT OF NOISE ABOUT THE ASSHOLES WHO ARE RUINING IT FOR THEM!!!! I get that you are atheist, and respect that 100%, as much as any other "religion or lack thereof". And why. But it just amazes me that none of people who AREN'T the assholes that DOMINATE the news with their hatred and bigotry and killing in God's name aren't also fighting these assclowns up one side and down the other!!!!!

ReplyDeleteAs I've said before, it's not anyone's private beliefs I take issue with - I might, if asked directly, say that I think that those who believe in god(s) are mistaken, but I certainly would never suggest that they haven't the right to those beliefs - it's the destructive effect of organised religion that angers and, periodically, horrifies me. And part of that destructive effect, it seems to me, is the power of the elite to suppress the opinions of the 'good' individuals amongst the laity, either by the slow dripfeed of the 'party line', or, in some cases, by outright coercion, either in a spiritual sense - 'you'll find yourself in hell' if you don't believe this, that or the other - or even by overt physical violence, as in Malala's case. As you say, the only way that things are going to change is from the bottom up - the hierocracy, after all, have a vested interest in maintaining their power and privilege - and that, again, comes back to education, as far as I'm concerned. Because nothing is more conducive to the propagation of religion than credulous ignorance amongst its adherents.
