And bloody tedious. A dusting of snow, hardly enough to even cover the ground, most of which has now melted, and the rail network descends into chaos. Looks like I'm going to have to set out for work at least half an hour earlier than normal to stand any chance of arriving on time, and tomorrow's trip to see my daughter and her concert might be in jeopardy, too. It's as though we've never had any winter conditions, in the whole history of the country, the way we seem to be completely incapable of dealing with something which, after all, happens virtually every year, and several times many years. No wonder the industry is a national joke, if a rather sick joke. 'The wrong kind of snow'. That's any bloody kind, apparently.
And while we're on the subject of predictability, of an equally tedious kind, the religious right's reaction to the Scouts considering the introduction of a secular oath falls squarely into that category. Let's cling to our unearned privilege, fuelled by worthless mythology, at all costs.

I saw something in the Daily Mail today about the snow. I thought I was looking at Richmond, except we don't have stalled trains when you can still see the ground through the snow. However, EVERYONE forgets how to drive, no matter if they have all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. So the ditches are filled, the jersey walls are crumbled, and the body shops giggle with glee while the insurance companies let out huge groans! I do hope that you make it to your daughter's concert.
ReplyDeleteAs to the Scouts, they continue to be in the news over here - thanks to the release of their "perversion files", and the continued fallout of those revelations. Now change.org is running a petition to get Verizon (huge phone carrier) to stop donating to them because of their discriminatory membership policies (UPS has already stopped to the tune of about $170,000/year if I remember correctly - too lazy to look it up).
Peace <3

Hello Jay
DeleteI'm just getting ready to set out on my journey - it's better to travel hopefully than to arrive, apparently! The train service, to judge by the National Rail website, is in considerably better order today, so I should make it to Plymouth, given a fair wind.
I've seen bits and pieces about the Scouts over there on various sites in recent months - their discriminatory membership policies would be illegal over here, the 'no atheists' thing not being a specific policy, but a side effect of the wording of their current oath. It doesn't diminish the hypocrisy, though - there has been much play about the Scouts being a 'Christian' organisation, but there have been alternatively worded oaths for Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists for over 40 years, without the world coming to an end. I stick to my position about it being about the retention of power and privilege, rather than anything specifically religious.
Love & best wishes
