Nonsensical journalism, and guess what the subject is?

There's been a news report running this morning, which I've caught on the radio, about a man who police have issued a warning about, and who was described on one bulletin I was listening to as a 'convicted paedophile'. Unless I've missed some thoughtcrime laws that have been rushed through lately, being sexually attracted to those below the age of consent isn't a crime, it's only acting on that attraction that's illegal. If I'm wrong, they'll be kicking my door in at any moment, and dragging me away in chains.

  1. What was the allegedly "convicted paedophile" doing that the bulletins were warning about? Attempting to lure children into his van with candy? I agree that there is a vast difference in thought and actual crimes, but based on this, it's hard to know if the person was actually doing something overt that required a warning. Over here, some communities have such onerous laws concerning where a convicted sex offender (no matter the offense) can live that there are "under the bridge" communities because it's the only place they can go.

    No kicking in doors...

  2. Hello Jay
The person concerned has disappeared, seemingly, presumably failing to register with the authorities, or something of that sort. The point I was making, though, was the way the public's perceptions are distorted by this sort of lazy, prejudicial journalism. Just because a person is attracted to a particular group, doesn't mean they shed all their morality and self-control - so-called 'normal' men don't rape every attractive woman they see, so why should it be assumed that those whose attractions lie elsewhere are automatically dangerous? I've no idea, I have to say, how 'dangerous' this particular individual is, but it was the general rather than the particular I was addressing.

  3. I agree with you. I just wasn't sure. Over here, we have such Draconian sex offender laws that someone pissing in an alley behind a bar at 3AM away from any children anywhere can wind up on the registry in some states. You are correct, it's totally out of control. And no politician wants to make any effort to make it far and EFFECTIVE to have a registry that truly reflects the dangerous sorts that can lurk out there. What is interesting is that I just read an article, which I'll never be able to find again, that said most sex offenders are the least likely to re-offend, meaning that there is something wrong with all the people listed on it - since they apparently are not that dangerous. I could go on and on...but I see what you are saying and agree 100%.

  4. Hello Jay
I read somewhere a few days ago about the low recidivism rates amongst sex offenders, presumably something along the same lines as the article you've seen (I can't remember where I saw it, either!). There are undoubtedly some very unpleasant and/or dangerous people in the world, who need to be controlled by appropriate means, but they are much fewer and further between than the media suggest, in my opinion.

  5. I thought convicted meant they were found guilty of doing the crime (in this case paedophilia acts, like sex with, or owning porn of, youngsters)?

  6. Hello
I'm well aware of what the word 'convicted' means - the point I was making was that you can't be convicted of being attracted to those below the age of consent, it's what you do that makes you a criminal, or not. The blurring of that distinction by lazy, ignorant journalists is what I object to.

Yes, I look at Scottie's site most days, and saw the post about the case you're referring to. New depths of stupidity and injustice seem to come to light every day, especially in this subject area.
