Chewed up

Maybe Just Hit 'Send' wasn't such a good idea after all - I've just been crying like a baby over a fictional character. I actually got to the stage of banning myself from reading stories on 'It's Only Me....' about 18 months ago, because so many of them seemed to reduce me to quivering wreckage. The ban didn't last long, though....
I spend so much of my life holding things inside, gritting my teeth and pretending everything is fine, that when the defences are breached from within, floods can ensue. Of tears, sometimes.

Love & best wishes to all

  2. Hello Brian
There's a link in the previous post. It's just a story, sometimes they get to me, pique my emotions. If you don't understand that concept, you have my sympathy.

  3. Why give sympathy? Is it a strength or weakness to be able to feel the emotions of a story? Who could possibly say?

  4. Thanks. I somehow missed the previous post, I hadn't seen it. I've bookmarked the site. I'm dealing with a personal problem at the moment. When I get time, I'll make it a point to read it and see how I myself react to it.

  5. I don't think there's a darn thing wrong with becoming emotional over a story. Isn't that why the author wrote it? If works of literature don't evoke a response from the readers, then there is no reason to have them at all.

@Brian: Hope you get over it soon! Sorry you're having a bad time.

    Peace <3

  6. Hello Joe
I don't think I'm qualified to give a definitive answer to the 'strength or weakness' point, but what I would say is that I would sympathise with anyone who wasn't able to be emotionally affected by fiction, because I suspect that 'real life' emotions might be a difficult area for them, too.

  7. Hello Brian
You're more than welcome to the link. I'm sorry things aren't going as well for you as they might - I hope it's something that's susceptible to a rapid and satisfactory conclusion.

  8. Hello Jay
I agree with you that any literature worth its name should invoke a response in its readers. There are considerations of time, place and degree, though, and I got rather over-emotional last night, probably because I was in that kind of mood to start with, which was why I stopped reading when I did. It's still a very good story by a very good writer, though.

  9. Hi there, Sammy

I agree with you about "Grasshopper" - he's an amazingly capable author, the more so given his age, and I very rarely come away from something's he written without at least a lump in the throat and a moistness around the eyes. Just Hit 'Send' is probably his most powerful story: I couldn't face reading some of the middle section where the lead characters are having a particularly rough time.

    Take care

    Mark

  10. Hello Mark
Yes, Jamie's definitely a star - it's such a shame his life has taken him away from writing recently.
