Oneirology

A couple of nights ago, I had one of my rare vivid dreams. I was behind a table, in some kind of 'school fete' kind of environment, but rather than trying to sell home-made cakes or raffle tickets, I sang Sit Down to anyone who approached me. And cried every time. There may be some kind of logical explanation, but it's one that escapes me completely.
Is there ever any significance to dreams at all? Or is it all just random neuronal firings? Discuss.

  1. Recently, I've had "serial dreams", and actually remember them - for a couple of days. I dream a dream, then the next night it picks up exactly where it left off the night before. Totally weird, and I couldn't figure out any significance. However, some dreams I have seem to be tied to events in my life, but I've never been able to figure out how they are created. Sleep is such a weird thing...no one really understands why we sleep, nor why we dream. I don't think it's random neuronal firings though! There's too much organized thought in them.

  2. Hello Jay
I don't think my dreams, in as far as I remember them, contain too much in the way of organised thought. Familiar people and places do appear, sometimes, but not usually in their familiar contexts. All rather random and weird - but entertaining on occasions, too.

  3. Hi Sammy,

I don't think there is any particular significance to dreams, at least mine.

Unlike you, I have multiple vivid dreams every single night, usually 3-4 dreams per night; they're not particularly exciting or scary, but they ARE rather fun.

I guess that's why I enjoy sleeping so much...I've read comments where other have problems sleeping...I NEED eight hours sleep per night...I could easily sleep 10 hours/night if there were enough hours in a day.

  4. Hello Andy
For the most part, I would agree about the insignificance of dreams, although there have been one or two that have cast an unexpected sidelight on issues in my life, as though the brain is still working while the body is resting. I'm interested in the idea of lucid dreaming, although I've never experienced one - that type of dream could really be fun!
Perhaps my relative paucity of memorable dreams could be linked to the fact that I tend not to sleep for particularly long - six hours is about average for me, and eight hours constitutes a major 'lie-in'. 'Not enough hours in the day' is a major mantra of mine - I find it hard to understand how people can ever be bored - life's much too short for that!

  5. Well, I *DO* have lucid dreams.

I don't actually manipulate my dreams, but I am aware that I am dreaming.

For example,a couple a weeks ago I dreamed that I was going whitewater rafting.

I had my my two electric guitars with me (why, I don't know) and they got soaking wet, so I set them on a sofa (which just happened to be on the river bank!) to dry out...I remember thinking this is just a dream, so I needn't worry about the guitars.

Last night I slept 9.5 hours, and had one long dream that sort of morphed a bit...even after awakening, I was able to fall back asleep and get back into the dream.

    Fun stuff!

  6. Hello Andy
It certainly sounds entertaining, if typically 'dream-illogical'. I always think of Silent Lucidity by Queensryche whenever the subject of lucid dreaming comes up - 'You're safe from pain in the dream domain'. I just love that song.
